Goodbye Tushies-- the world's ONLY gel free diaper

Has anyone been wondering where is Tushies diapers??  I know I have been wondering and trying to find answers! Since late last year, I have had a hard time finding them, and was curious as to what was going on.  I called the company Hains Celestial group (they bought out the small family owned company) and inquired about the diminishing Tushies diapers supply.  They were always vague in their response to me.  Their response was that they didn't really know...they could only tell me that the diapers were in limited production.  As I recall, one woman I spoke with said "maybe they are making more."
I sensed something was wrong, and I bought any boxes of Tushies I could find on the internet.  I recently heard that Tushies diapers had been discontinued.  I wanted to confirm if this were true and called the Hains Celestial group again this month and spoke with a woman who identified herself as Juliette.  At first, she was "stand offish" and told me that she didn't know much.  As I questioned her more, she went to read some notes that the company had on Tushies and told me that their Toddler, and large diapers were discontinued and that's all she could tell me.  I continued to ask her questions and she "conveniently" at the moment read that their medium and small diapers had been discontinued as well.  So to sum it up, Tushies is discontinued!  I am upset about this, as the diaper worked very well for my LO.  The most natural diaper on the market with no SAP (Super Absorbent Polymers).  The diaper was soft, and she did not have a diaper rash problem with them.  Unfortunately, Tushies was the only diaper in the world that did not have SAPs.  The diaper worked well, absorbed well and I am sorry to see them go.  I am disappointed with Hains Celestial group for trying to cover this up. They play the "ignorant card" with concerned consumers who want answers when they knew all along that these diapers were discontinued.  I have now switched to using mainly cloth diapers.  I find the all in one pocket diapers absorb really well better than disposable diapers!  I know it may sound crazy for those moms who use only disposable.  If your concerned about all the chemicals that are in disposable diapers, and are searching for a natural alternative, cloth diaper is the way.  However, I am still on the search for a more natural disposable diaper for when we are out, and let me tell you, it's hard to find.
I'm sure that those who love the Tushies diapers appreciate them so much more now.  I hope that one day, they will come back.

  1. I just realized this :( I contacted the company a few weeks ago via e-mail and never heard back. Now I see they say out of stock... I've been using them since my oldest (5.5 yrs) showed sensitivity to the gel. I have 3 boys now and we use cloth almost all the time except for trips. Of course we have a trip coming up and I"m not sure what to do now. Guessing I"m gonna have to try the 7th Generation and Earths Best and see if either are ok. Thanks for the post!

  2. Amy, it is sad that after all this time Hains Celestial Group still won't (officially) admit that Tushies has been discontinued. Like you, I also have a long trip coming up. I've tried Earth's best diapers before also from Hains Celestial group. That didn't work out so well for my daughter. At that time my daughter had a bad diaper rash, so not sure if it was because of the diaper. That's when I did research and found out about Tushies.
Currently, the disposable brands that I am using are Nurtured by Nature, and Seventh Generation. Good luck on your search for disposables, and if you find any that works great for your babies please do let me know!

  3. I have heard too that Tushies are no longer being sold. Every place I used to buy them has told me that they have not been able to obtain more. I also saw on their website that the baby wipes were discontinued, but it doesn't say that about the diapers. All it says for the diapers is that they are out-of-stock. What is going on with Hain Celestial Group? Why can't they see that some babies and toddlers need to have gel free diapers due to chronic rashes.

  4. I just did a Google search for Tushies wipes and came across your blog. I was a fan of the Tushies wipes. Free of nasty chemicals, the wipes were perfect. I truly do not like the Hains Celestial Group. My son has food allergies and found out that the don't label for cross contamination with the top 8 allergens. While I understand it's not a law to have to label for cross contamination, I believe for infant and toddler foods it's the least they can do. When my son had a slight reaction to one of their cookies I called the company and was told labeling is a marketing decision and the rep was pretty obnoxious about it.

    1. Michi, thanks so much for that info. I also had no idea about their foods potentially having cross contamination with top 8 allergens! I agree with you, that it's the least they can do. The safety and health of infants and toddlers should be priority OVER marketing decisions!

  5. I've started a petition to The Hains Celestial Group to bring back Tushies and hold them accountable for their actions. Please sign it if you really liked Tushies.

    2. Sorry I stumbled upon this too late to sign the petition. Tushies diapers and wipes met my criteria for disposable diapering products. It's shameful that Hain Celestial Group would not be straightforward with its customers. It's a shame that no other company has stepped up to the plate to fill the gap now that Tushies products have been discontinued. If I have a chance to do it again, cloth diapering and wash clothes with a diluted, unscented castile soap solution is the way I would go!

  6. I have a case of Tushies Large Preemie (4-5 lbs) diapers that are brand new, unopened, leftover and I did not use for my son. I'd be happy to pass them along if somebody could use them.

  8. Has anyone tried the Nature Babycare brand?
"the first ECO-friendly high-performance diaper, based on new green technology, protected by a Swedish patent. It has an exclusive 100% chlorine-free absorbent material and the material against the baby's skin is based on corn instead of plastic, like traditional diapers. 100% compostable, breathable and extremely kind for the baby. The packaging is 100% compostable and based on corn."
    This quote from "thedailygreen.com"
We have used them since our little one was born, when we are not using cloth. They are great!

  9. Have you researched or tried Honest Company's diapers?

    1. Hi Carrie, thanks, yes I have researched Honest, and they seem to have less chemicals than other disposable brands. The ingredients for them are: Chlorine-free fluff, bio-core (wheat/corn starch blended with SAP), Plant-Based PLA (outer layer, inner layer, moisture barrier layer), non-toxic adhesives (in seams and joints), polymer spandex and polyuthane (in fastening system & leg/waist elastic) & Ink.
As I said, Honest seem to have less chemicals than a lot of other diapers, but unfortunately they still have SAPs. Tushies were indeed the world's only gel free disposable diaper and may well indeed be the only diaper that would have never contained SAP's and other harsh chemicals. I would recommend Honest to any parent who are looking for a disposable diaper with "less chemicals". I may do a review on them shortly.

  10. I heard the Naty by nature babycare eco diapers do not have SAP

  11. I have used Naty since my son was born in March 2013. We have never had a blow out, diaper rash, or any leakage issue. I love them however they do admit to using at least a small amount of SAP. Also, while they try to eliminate as much plastic and other nasty stuff that traditional diapers use they are not 100% biodegradable. They are better then traditional diapers but not as good as cloth. Here is the link for more info: http://www.naty.com/faq/production/?doing_wp_cron=1377810013.2100789546966552734375
